The Conestoga River meanders 60+ miles across Lancaster County. Native Americans had a bustling community on its southern end where they negotiated numerous treaties with the likes of William Penn and others in the 1700's. In the 19th century the river was used as a transportation route for goods to and from the city via a network of locks and canals that connected the community to the bustling ports of Baltimore. Many dams and mills were erected along its course that were essential in powering Lancaster's burgeoning economy. It is now a picturesque recreational resource, as well as, the focus of conservation efforts to help curb agricultural runoff headed to the Chesapeake Bay.
